Make Way for Books
Make Way for Books is an early children literacy non-profit that provides programs from birth to age five that help to ensure that children arrive in first grade with the necessary early literacy skills to be successful. It’s impact has been expanded and enhanced by its partnership with SVP.
DEFINING CLEAR GOALS
Prior to SVP involvement, the MWFB board consisted of seven members and only five of the members contributed to MWFB. Attendance at board meetings was very high; however, members did not have defined roles and responsibilities. MWFB concentrated on Board Leadership, specifically defining roles and responsibilities. MWFB board members received training in board development conducted by SVP Partner Steve Alley. As a result of this training, board members developed a formal member agreement that details responsibilities and expectations and identifies criteria for adding new members.

Executive Director Mary Jan Bancroft worked with SVP Partner Jane Wilson to analyze the staffing patterns and benefits. Prior to SVP involvement, the MWFB staffing structure was horizontal. All positions reported to Mary Jan. Jane Wilson provided guidance in analyzing organizational staffing and suggested a more practical structure.
As a result of Jane’s consultation, MWFB reorganized existing positions and created a development position. Jane provided sample job descriptions, salary comparisons, and advice on advertising and interviewing. She also consulted on employee health insurance and background checks.

LOOKING AHEAD
SVP Partner Mark Rubin presented “Resource Development 101”. SVP Partner Ann Lovell evaluated MWFB’s current funding sources and fundraising activities in preparation for developing a more strategic fund development plan.
Because MWFB has benefited from additional funding from the State of Arizona First Things First, SVP’s expertise and financial support has been critical in allowing MWFB to integrate new staff and increase its capacity to serve families and young children.
In the coming year, SVP will assist with Fund Development, Strategic Planning and Program Evaluation.
